For months I have been trying to figure out a way that we could take a full week vacation. There's something about getting away for more than just a night or two, and there's something about being together as a family without being on anyone else's schedule or following anyone else's rules or having any distractions like work, tv, newspapers, or the Internet.
Finally we decided on July 13-17, and our goal was to make it three nights camping as a family. Possibly. But if it didn't work out, no sweat. We would just go get a hotel or return home. And if it was going well, maybe we'd see if we could stop by to see some of our family that we had been hoping to visit.
Sunday, we set out. We spent the morning getting the camper and food ready. Tim's parents let us use their camper trailer, which worked out pretty well. Growing up, my family used a tent trailer similar to this one, but Tim and I have used a tent ever since we've been married. I like both, honestly. A trailer has hassles before and after and sometimes during the camping trip, but there are advantages, particularly if it starts to rain (which we didn't experience on this trip, thankfully).
Tim seems to prefer the trailer to the tent, so that is probably what we will continue to use, since camping really is a lot of work when you have kids. One parent watches the kids while the other does all the work, like the set up, take down, cooking, washing dishes, etc.
Tim did a lot of work on this trip, but I felt like we went in with the mindset that it would be a lot of work and we would just have to go with the flow, and that mindset worked well for us.
Kate and Ethan got along well on the trip. Here they are entertaining each other at dinner on the first night:

Here they are smiling sweetly at each other, as if they never, ever feel like strangling one another for taking away their toys from the other:

Looks like fun! I love the bike trailer. I have been begging Andy for one for years. Do you use it often? Is it the kind that converts to a stroller?
