We had a choice of visiting either Salem, home of the famed witch hunts, or Plymouth Village, as in, where the Pilgrims lived. Many of my students are fascinated with Salem, and I've watched many-a home movies of 8th graders depicting the story of Sarah Goode, Tituba, and other players in the witch trials, but Tim was most interested in this trip, so we tried it out.
Also in Salem is the home that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne's book House of Seven Gables. We got a great tour of that building, which overlooks a really cool harbor. For lunch, we had time to walk around the town, which not surprisingly was filled with ghost and witch-themed shops and plenty of goth-looking characters. Salem has an amazing art museum, which we took a 10 minute run-through. (Tim's not much into museums, and we were hungry.) We most enjoyed the neighborhood fair at the common, where we got free ice cream bars and a really good chicken wrap.
